Location factfile on Nagasaki
Films shot/set in Nagasaki – The bells of Nagasaki (1950) is an old film directed by Hideo Oba and adapted from the book by Takashi Nagai. It portrays the terrible experience of one of the few survivors of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Takashi Nagai (the actor Masao Wakahara). The film score Yuji Koseki composed the theme song “The bells of Nagasaki” that became immensely popular. Rapsody in August (1991) directed, produced and written by Akira Kurosawa starring Sachiko Murase, Hidetaka Yoshioka and Richard Gere. It is the story of an elderly hibakusha (the Japanese word that indicates who was hit by the bomb explosion and exposed to radiations) who lost his husband because of the atomic bomb. She comes to know that she has a brother living in Hawaii who asks her to visit him before he dies.
