Location factfile on Belarus
At a glance: Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The Belarus is a republic and has two official languages: Belarusian and Russian. Belarus is divided into 6 regions and a territory of the capital, namely the city of Minsk. Despite the radiations of neighboring Ukraine’s 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Belarus, today, has more natural attractions to photograph than you might suspect: unbroken birch groves, vast forested marshland and green fields. Minsk’s neoclassical Stalinist architecture (especially the KGB building) are, instead, the characteristic man-made attractions of the country. And strolling down the capital city’s streets is very common to meet local people wearing the typical furry hats for protection against the freezing-cold temperatures. To show how the country wants to restart after an unlucky past we can mention two very-interesting cultural events: International Festival of Arts in Vitebsk is held every July in Vitebsk to celebrate and it can attract participants from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland and some former states of Yugoslavia. Lipstapad International Film Festival is an event wanted by the government to promote the country’s film and it’s held every November in Minsk. Best time to visit or/and shoot Spring and late summer Official languages – Belarusian and Russian. Curiosities about Belarus – The locations where you need to go for shooting winning photos are the following: the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park to capture a precious image of the European bison (the largest mammal in the continent) and the Braslaw Lakes National Park to take a picture of its beautiful lakes; and then Minsk, a unique cocktail of post-Soviet and modern European atmosphere, Vitebsk, the ‘cultural capital’ of Belarus (because of hosting every year an international music event and because it’s the Marc Chagall home-town), Polatsk (the oldest city in Belarus), the very-fascinating Niesvizh Castle and Mir Castle on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, the town of Hrodna, whose narrow streets have been preserved during the World War II. Some films set in the country are: Europa Europa (1990) is an historical war drama film based on the autobiography of Solomon Perel, a German Jewish boy who pretended to be an elite “Nazi” German to escape the Holocaust; Defiance (2008) is an American War film set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany.
