Location factfile on Antigua
At a glance: Antigua and Barbuda is a state in the West Indies in the Americas, consisting of two major islands surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Although Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign state, it remains a member of the Commonwealth and so the UK’s Queen is its Head of State. Cristoforo Colombo called one of these two islands “Antigua” inspired by the Virgin of La Antigua in the Seville Cathedral. There is a famous saying between Antiguan people, “the island has 365 beaches, one for each day of the year”, that give you an idea of the kind of paradise that you can find in this corner of the Caribbean: white sand beaches, coral reefs, green sea water with many mysterious wrecks to discover by diving. Barbuda, the smallest one between the two islands of the country, is a quiet, single-village island that attracts many passionate birdwatchers as well as tourists in search of clear water and peaceful beaches. In this beautiful Caribbean country there are even three parks worth seeing: Devil’s Bridge National Park, Greencastle Hill National Park, Nelson’s Dockyard National Park. Antigua and Barbuda’s transport system is made up of public and private services (bus and taxis). Driving is on the left-hand side and roads are winding, unpaved and slippery (because of the Volcanic dust that sometimes settles upon them). Official language – English; other language – English creole Best time to visit or/and shoot December to April. Curiosities about Antigua & Barbuda – The most popular place with photographers in Antigua is not one of its beautiful 365 beaches but a natural rock arch, called the Devil’s Bridge, in the remote north-eastern point, characterised by great plumes of water. The Sweetest Mango (2001) is the first feature film produced in Antigua and Barbuda. Here’re some of the main events in Anguilla: Antigua and Barbuda Carnival, inaugurated in 1834 to celebrate the end of slavery, it is a two-week event between July and August; Antigua and Barbuda independence festival, a week of celebration for Antigua’s total independence on November 1st, 1981; Antigua sailing week is one of the first sailing regattas in the world and it attracts every year participants from all over the world.
