Taste Of Amsterdam: Our Producer Wim’s Food And Drink Tips

What is your favourite local food and drink?

Ij beer

A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of trying a special kind of beer in Amsterdam, which happened to be a local brew known as “Ij.” Interestingly, the name “Ij” refers to the water in Amsterdam, adding a unique touch to the beer’s identity. When I took my first sip, I was immediately captivated by its delightful flavour, and it left me wanting more. This beer truly embodied the essence of Amsterdam’s brewing traditions, and I could sense the passion and dedication of the local brewers behind its creation.

The “Ij” beer had a distinct taste that can be best described as deliciously balanced. It seemed to strike the perfect harmony between a smooth, malty sweetness and a subtle yet satisfying bitterness from the hops. The combination of flavours created an exceptionally refreshing and enjoyable drinking experience.

As I savoured the “Ij” beer with my colleagues, I couldn’t help but appreciate the camaraderie and connection it  brought to our gathering. In Amsterdam, enjoying local drinks together is a cherished social tradition, and it was no different with “Ij.” We raised our glasses, and in true Dutch fashion, exclaimed “PROOST!” as a friendly toast. This camaraderie and shared enjoyment of the local brew made the experience even more memorable.

What made the “Ij” beer even more special was the fact that it was produced by a local brewer. This connection to the community and the authenticity of the drink added a layer of pride to our enjoyment. It was evident that the brewer put heart and soul into crafting this exceptional beverage, and that passion shone through in every sip.

Overall, my encounter with “Ij” beer in Amsterdam was a delightful experience, allowing me to immerse myself in the city’s vibrant culture and rich brewing heritage. If you ever find yourself in Amsterdam, I wholeheartedly recommend trying this local gem. Not only will you get to taste a delicious and authentic beer, but you’ll also be a part of a cherished tradition that brings people together in cheerful celebration – a true embodiment of the spirit of Amsterdam. So, raise your glass and give a hearty “PROOST!” to an unforgettable drinking experience!
