Damascus is a city with a long and rich history.
Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and has been called the “pearl of the East”, “the eye of the Arab world”, and “fountain of life”. The city’s strategic location and rich history have made it a crossroads of cultures and a center of trade and commerce.
Subsection 1.2 Damascus was founded in the 3rd millennium BC by the Aramaeans, an ancient Semitic-speaking people who came from what is now Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. The city was conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC and later became part of the Roman Empire. In 661 AD, Damascus was captured by Muslim Arabs and became the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate.
Subsection 1.3 Under Muslim rule, Damascus flourished as a center of trade and learning. The city was also home to a number of renowned scholars and poets. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the Abbasid Caliphate, which ruled from Baghdad, began to decline, and Damascus became the capital of an independent Muslim state known as the Emirate of Syria.
Subsection 1.4 In 1174, Damascus was captured by the Crusaders and became part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Crusaders built many fortifications in the city, including the citadel of Saladin (al-Mu’azzam Isa), which is now known as the Citadel of Damascus. In 1260, Damascus was recaptured by Muslim forces led by Sultan Baibars, and it remained under Muslim rule until 1516 when it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.
