Overview of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

The Running of the Bulls is a traditional event that takes place in Pamplona, Spain during the San Fermin festival. The festival is held annually from July 6-14 and features a number of events, including bullfights, concerts, and of course, the Running of the Bulls.

The history of the Running of the Bulls dates back to the 13th century when bullfighting was first introduced to Spain. The sport quickly gained popularity and by the 16th century, bullfights were being held regularly in Pamplona. In 1591, city officials decided to hold a bullfight during the San Fermin festival as a way to entertain locals and visitors alike.

The first recordedRunning of the Bulls took place in 1776, although it is believed that the event actually started several years earlier. According to historical accounts, a group of young men decided to test their bravery by running ahead of a herd of bulls that were being led to the bullring for a fight. This tradition continued for many years and eventually became an official part of the San Fermin festival.

Rules and Regulations

Nowadays, there are strict rules and regulations surrounding the Running of the Bulls. Participants must be at least 18 years old and must register in advance in order to take part in the run.

On race day, runners must dress in traditional attire which includes white pants and shirts with red scarves or neckerchiefs tied around their necks. At 8am sharp, runners gather in front of Santo Domingo Church where they wait for the start of the run.

When the starting gun goes off, bulls are released from their pens and begin running through the streets of Pamplona. The route is roughly 825 meters long and ends at the bullring where the bulls will be used for that day’s bullfight.

Along the route, there are a number of “safety zones” where runners can take refuge if they need to. These zones are typically marked with red and white barriers. If a runner is knocked down by a bull, it is important that they stay down and cover their heads with their hands until the animal has passed.
