Sant’Efisio’s Procession: Genoa’s Most Unique Festival.
Every year on May 1, the city of Genoa celebrates Sant’Efisio, its patron saint. The festival, which is also known as “Il Santo,” begins with a procession that starts at the city’s cathedral and winds its way through the streets. The procession is led by a statue of Sant’Efisio, which is carried by a group of men dressed in traditional clothing.
The origins of the festival date back to the 17th century, when the city was plagued by an epidemic. The residents prayed to Sant’Efisio for deliverance from the disease, and when the epidemic finally ended, they vowed to hold a yearly procession in his honor.
