About Phil

Hi, I’m Phil!

I work primarily in corporate video as a DoP / Editor and my specialty within corporate is science, technology and healthcare; subjects I have an affinity for, along with the kind of people who work in those areas.

Finance has also been a mainstay, with productions, live streams and media training for major international banks and investment companies.

Working with directors, whether in the room or remote, my aim is to help them get what they are looking for and as much as possible, have the technology of the shoot become secondary to the relationship of the talent to the audience.

If I am directing non-professional talent in front of the camera, whether a lit and art-directed sit-down documentary style piece or a behind-the-scenes vox-pop grabbed on the go, I am looking for an injection of personality that lifts the content from information to informing.

Helping deliver media and presentation training alongside numerous talented journalists to executives and spokespeople across areas ranging from crisis comms to billion-dollar acquisitions helps considerably, as does teaching acting for the screen and media production for cohorts ranging from postgrads to children, work which sometimes includes directing, shooting and editing shorts and showreel pieces.

For the majority of my work, the style and filming approach are driven by the need to get the best looking and sounding shot while being restricted in time and location. I like it to look natural, but with a lift – modelling the light on the face, having deep backgrounds that if possible immerse us in the world of the story and tell us something extra. Working a lot as a small crew or solo shooter on shoots abroad, the simple logistics of moving kit around often dictates what is possible.

I really like assignments such as case studies where there is the opportunity to tell a story and visually bring it life but more than anything, I love the variety.
