How to Uncover the Fascinating History of Manhattan, Kansas
The first step in exploring the history of Manhattan is to discover the unique story of its founding. The town was originally settled by members of the New England Emigrant Aid Company in 1854. This group of abolitionists came to Kansas with the intention of helping to make it a free state. Their efforts were instrumental in ensuring that Kansas entered the Union as a free state in 1861.
In addition to its role in the history of the American frontier, Manhattan has also been home to a number of important cultural figures. One such figure is writer Langston Hughes, who spent his childhood here from 1903 to 1915. Hughes went on to become one of the most important voices of the Harlem Renaissance and helped to shape 20th-century American literature.
