At a glance: Surrounded by low hills, located on the Mur River, there is the town of Graz: the capital of the Land of Styria, a verdant and forest-rich region, in Austria. It is the second most populous city in Austria with a very significant presence of University students. As well as the prestigious addition of its city centre to the UNESCO World Heritage List in the ending of the second millennium, Graz was also the European Capital of Culture for 2003. Being without a proper Alpine area and en route to the more widely publicized locations of Salzburg and Innsbruck, Graz is often overlooked by visitors but it’s a shame because we are talking about a really attractive location with many treasures to discover. After all, it couldn’t be otherwise for the town which was the proper rival to Vienna to be the home of the Leopoldine line of the Habsburg family. In the last few years many modern buildings have been built in Graz, the most famous of which are the modern art museum (the Kunsthaus), a museum built on the bank of the river Mur and the Murinsel, that is the island on the Mur, built in the middle of the river with an open-air theatre and a playground. Best time to visit or/and shoot April to September. Curiosities about Graz – Graz is a characteristic Austrian town, situated on the Mur river and surrounded by a heavy forest. In the old town of Graz, walking the narrow alleys, you can enjoy wonderful buildings, medieval and Italian Renaissance. The best place from where you can capture picturesque photos of the unique roofscape of the Old Town, a UNESECO World Cultural Heritage Site, is Castle Mountain called The Schlossberg. The magnificent Baroque Eggenberg Palace, with its superb garden, is another beautiful place you must see if you are in Graz. Over the roofs of Graz (2009) is a 45-minute documentary about the old centre of Graz.
